Nuclear Stress

A nuclear stress test evaluates blood flow to the heart muscle during rest and stress. The test may involve walking on a treadmill or receiving medication that simulates exercise.

A small amount of radioactive tracer is used to create images of blood flow to the heart. The amount of radiation used is low and comparable to other commonly used medical imaging tests.

Persantine myocardial perfusion imaging may be used for patients unable to exercise adequately on a treadmill, patients with pacemakers, or patients with certain ECG abnormalities such as left bundle branch block.

Your test may be scheduled as either a one-day study or a two-day study depending on the imaging protocol.

What to Expect

Your visit may follow a one-day or two-day protocol depending on the imaging plan.

During the Exam

The test includes rest imaging, a stress portion using a treadmill or medication, and post-stress imaging. There may be waiting periods between stages while the tracer circulates.

One-Day vs Two-Day Testing

One-Day Protocol: Rest and stress scans on the same day, approximately 3 to 4 hours.

Two-Day Protocol: Day 1 rest imaging and Day 2 stress testing and imaging. Each visit usually takes 1 to 2 hours.

Important Information

Caffeine can interfere with the stress medication and may require the test to be rescheduled. If you are unsure about any preparation instructions or were unable to follow them, please contact our clinic before your appointment.
