Pulmonary function testing includes spirometry, lung volume testing, lung diffusion testing and the six-minute walk test (6MWT). These tests help your doctor evaluate breathing capacity, airflow, and lung function.
The test involves breathing into specialized equipment that measures how much air you can inhale and exhale and how quickly you can move air through your lungs.
Preparation Guide
Please review this checklist before coming to your appointment.
Do Not Smoke
Do not smoke for at least 4 hours before your test.
Avoid Heavy Meals
Avoid heavy meals before your test. A light meal is acceptable.
Avoid Strenuous Exercise
Avoid strenuous exercise before your appointment and wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing.
Bring Your Documents
Bring a list of your medications, especially inhalers/puffers, your requisition form, and your health card.
What to Expect
Before Your Test
Be prepared to answer questions about inhaler use, previous surgeries and previous heart attacks.
Some inhalers may need to be withheld before testing. Please follow the instructions provided by your physician or booking staff.
During the Exam
You will breathe in and out through a mouthpiece. You may be asked to take deep breaths, blow out hard and fast, or breathe normally.
The breathing tests are safe for most people, do not involve needles and usually take 30–45 minutes.
What Testing Measures
Testing helps assess how much air your lungs hold, how quickly you move air in and out, and how well your lungs transfer oxygen into your blood.
Bronchodilator Testing
During testing, you may receive an inhaler called a bronchodilator to open your airways. Comparing your breathing before and after the medication helps assess your response and provides information about asthma and other breathing conditions.
If you have had surgery or a heart attack, or have coughed up blood, within the past month, your appointment will be rebooked. Please contact our clinic before your appointment.
If you have symptoms of a cold, flu, or respiratory infection, please contact our clinic before your appointment to determine whether the test should be rescheduled.
